Keyword density is the percentage of times a specific keyword or phrase appears in a piece of content relative to the total number of words. It is one of the original on-page SEO signals and remains relevant for understanding how focused your content is on a particular topic.
The formula is simple: Keyword Density = (Number of times keyword appears ÷ Total word count) × 100. For example, if your article is 1,000 words long and your target keyword appears 15 times, the keyword density is 1.5%.
Most SEO professionals recommend keeping keyword density between 1% and 3%. Going above 5% risks keyword stuffing penalties from Google, while staying below 0.5% may mean your content is not focused enough on the topic you want to rank for.
