Every SEO practitioner talks about building topical authority. Almost none of them can tell you how much topical authority they currently have, how it compares to competitors, or how much more they need before they start seeing ranking improvements. Topical authority has remained a qualitative concept when it should be a measurable one.

This guide bridges that gap โ€” providing the specific metrics and calculation methods that quantify your topical authority position in any niche.

The Three Dimensions of Topical Authority

Topical authority is not a single score โ€” it is the product of three dimensions that interact:

Coverage breadth: How many of the important topics within your niche do you have content for? A niche with 200 significant subtopics where you have covered 40 of them = 20% coverage breadth.

Coverage depth: For the topics you have covered, how comprehensive is each piece? A page ranking in position 15 for its target keyword is shallower than one ranking in position 2.

Authority coherence: How well connected are your topical pieces through internal linking and thematic consistency? Isolated articles on related topics provide less topical authority signal than a well-linked cluster as covered in our guide to content siloing.

Measuring Coverage Breadth

Step 1 โ€” Build your topic universe. Use Google's People Also Ask for your core topic keywords to identify all significant subtopics. As we covered in our guide to building a topical map, this creates your complete niche map. Count the total unique subtopics โ€” this is your denominator.

Step 2 โ€” Audit your content coverage. Using your keyword map from our guide to keyword mapping, count how many of the subtopics have a published page on your site. This is your numerator.

Coverage Score = (Your Covered Topics / Total Topics in Niche) ร— 100

A Coverage Score above 60% typically indicates strong topical authority potential. Below 30% means Google does not yet have enough evidence to treat your site as a topical authority, regardless of your domain authority or individual page quality.

Measuring Coverage Depth

For each topic you have covered, check the average ranking position in Google Search Console. Calculate the distribution:

Depth Score: (Percentage of your covered topics ranking in positions 1โ€“10) ร— 1.0 + (Positions 11โ€“20) ร— 0.5 + (Positions 21โ€“50) ร— 0.2

A healthy Depth Score indicates your content is not just present but is performing. If your Coverage Score is high but your Depth Score is low, you have breadth without quality โ€” the pages exist but are not ranking well, indicating either quality issues or insufficient internal linking and link equity.

Measuring Authority Coherence

Use our internal link checker to measure your internal linking density within your topic clusters. For each cluster, calculate the average number of internal links between cluster pages.

Coherence threshold: Each cluster article should have a minimum of 3 internal links to other articles in the same cluster. Clusters where the average falls below 2 internal links per article have low coherence โ€” the topical signal is fragmented rather than concentrated.

Benchmarking Against Competitors

Use the Semrush or Ahrefs free tier to check how many organic keywords your top competitors rank for in your target topic area. If Competitor A ranks for 450 keywords in your niche and you rank for 180, your Coverage Breadth is approximately 40% of theirs. This relative benchmark tells you how much content investment is required to reach competitive topical authority parity.

More importantly: identify the specific keywords your competitors rank for that you do not. As we covered in our guide to content gap analysis, these gaps represent the exact topics you need to cover to reach coverage parity.

When Do You Have Enough Topical Authority?

There is no universal threshold, but as a practical guideline for competitive niches:

  • Coverage Score above 50%
  • Depth Score above 0.4 (meaning at least 40% of covered topics rank in the top 20)
  • Coherence average above 3 internal links per cluster article

Sites meeting all three thresholds typically see their new content ranking significantly faster โ€” within weeks rather than months โ€” as Google has established topical trust for the domain in that subject area.

Summary

Measure topical authority through three quantifiable dimensions: Coverage Breadth (percentage of niche topics covered), Coverage Depth (ranking distribution of covered topics), and Authority Coherence (internal link density within clusters). Benchmark against competitors using keyword count comparison. Target Coverage Scores above 50%, Depth Scores above 0.4, and Coherence averages above 3 internal links per article. Use our internal link checker and keyword map tracking to monitor progress monthly.
